Catch the Action!
Where’s the Action?
I like to get out of my regular routine. That’s what I call having fun. It means being surprised! And also…I like to get together with other people.
Exercising: We’re always looking for a fun place where we can exercise. It should be a place where we’ll often see the same people and can smile and say, “Hi!” Fit Together Wellness Center is just the place. It just recently opened on Route 9 in Hadley at 231 Russell St. Its focus is on the needs of people with developmental disabilities and mental disorders, but anybody can join. It’s what I call “accessible” – on a bus route and not pricey. It costs $20 a month or $190 a year. You’ll love this clean, bright environment and meet lots of friendly volunteers. I found all kinds of programs available – like yoga classes and exercise partnerships. Best of all, you’ll be hanging around with people like us, people who want to change their lifestyles and enjoy fit, active lives. See you there!
Exploring the Sky: Check out the frequent free programs at the Amherst College Observatory, 86 Snell St., Amherst. Phone: (413) 256-6234. They start after dark, but it will be getting dark earlier and earlier now as we get into fall. The full moon in September is really something to see! To get a ride, find someone who wants to watch the stars and has a car!
Partying: McCray’s Farm in South Hadley is the place to go if the organization you belong to wants to go where there’s something for everyone to do. McCray’s is a real farm that sells light lunches and homemade ice cream. You can all eat at their big picnic tables inside and
outdoors, too. You can visit the farm animals – but that’s mostly for little kids. In September, wild Canadian geese try to take over the pond from the ducks who live there.
I go for the 18-hole mini-golf course. It costs $5 and it’s a real challenge. You can beat your bragging friends and laugh a lot. There are hayrides and pick-your-own-pumpkins in October. On the Web site is a map.
Big Motivator: For me, it’s music. To feel good, you’ve got to exercise. At the beginning of your lifestyle change, your body’s going to struggle to get off the leash. Your body doesn’t like change, but you do! Use music to win the battle. Get yourself a CD with a fast beat. Woo your body into action with that! It works for me. |
